چکیده

Open learner models (OLM) are learner models which are accessible to the learner, allowing them to view, and sometimes modify, their model. This openness may raise questions of learner trust in their learner model: if users do not agree with, or trust the information they can see about themselves, their trust in the interaction will likely be reduced. Using a Wizard-of-Oz approach, we consider learner trust and possibilities for developing trust in OLMs.

Bringing chatbots into education: Towards natural language negotiation of open learner models

There is an extensive body of work on Intelligent Tutoring Systems: computer environments for education, teaching and training that adapt to the needs of the individual learner. Work on personalisation and adaptivity has included research into allowing the student user to enhance the system’s adaptivity by improving the accuracy of the underlying learner model. Open Learner Modelling, where the...

The Potential for Chatbots in Negotiated Learner Modelling: A Wizard-of-Oz Study

This paper explores the feasibility of using conversational agents, or chatbots, in negotiated learner modelling. This approach aims to combine the motivational, intuitive and domain-independent benefits of natural language dialogue using a chatbot, with the opportunities for learner reflection and increased model accuracy that can be achieved through negotiation of the learner model contents. ...

Investigating Learner Trust in Adaptive Learning Systems

Open learner models (OLM) is an adaptive learning system that externalise the learner model contents to the user. OLMs assist learners in tracking their knowledge, and promote independent learning by offering information about their knowledge that the learner would not usually see (e.g. a breakdown of concept understanding or descriptions of misconceptions held) which may allow learners to iden...

Do Students Trust Their Open Learner Models?

Open learner models (OLM) enable users to access their learner model to view information about their understanding. Opening the learner model to the learner may increase their perceptions of how a system evaluates their knowledge and updates the model. This raises questions of trust relating to whether the learner believes the evaluations are correct, and whether they trust the system as a whol...

Investigating a Systematic Approach to the Promotion of EFL Learners’ Autonomy

Abstract Autonomy is the ability to take charge of one’s own learning. However, this ability is not inborn and must be acquired by formal instruction (Holec, 1981). Therefore, to offer a systematic approach to the devel-opment of learner autonomy in language learning process, Benson (2001) argues that learner autonomy is described in terms of learners’ control over the three dimensions of lea...
